A.P.R.T. - The Pied Piper of Hamelin

ACCADEMIA PERDUTA
ROMAGNA TEATRI
Teatro Stabile d’Arte Contemporanea

The Accademia Perduta/Romagna Teatri, today  Teatro Stabile d’Arte Contemporanea (Repertory Theater of Contemporary Art) and directed by Ruggero Sintoni and Claudio Casadio, is recognized as one of most successful theater projects in Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland, and Portugal. The Teatro Stabile was established by a group of young actors in 1982 as the Children’s Theater Company. From its founding to the present, the Accademia Perduta has been engaged in the intensive and fruitful production of theatrical programming for children.

The theater’s productions, written, directed, and often performed by Claudio Casadio, are distinguished by the precise and original style that has, over time, become their signature.

The children’s theater produced by the Accademia Perduta Children’s Theatre transcends the “category” in order to become a true art form based in such fundamental considerations as attention to fantasy, dreamlike and evocative imagery, and the importance of involving spectators emotionally. The Accademia Perduta Children’s Theatre makes children dream, but it also knows how to take adults back to the dreams of their childhood.
Age range: 5-10 years

“A rat … two rats ... three rats,
They’re coming in bevies and packs!
We’d better start battening down,
there’s a rat convention in Hamelin town!”
The Lord of the Rats and the King of Hamelin have entered into a secret pact.
The rats are insatiable when it comes to food, and the King is no less of a glutton when it comes to stacks of gold. That’s what lies behind the terrible invasion. The peaceful city of Hamelin is ruled by greedy and corrupt individuals who are ready to sacrifice the town if doing so helps line their pockets.
The rats are everywhere and the city is nearly in ruins. The citizens’ only hope comes from the sound of an enchanted flute.
But if the Pied Piper wants to capture the enormous Lord of the Rats, he’ll need the children’s help. Seven of them, just like the seven notes of his flute, can free the city once and for all of its plague of rats.
When it is all over, the rarest example of the Rat Species is enclosed in a circus cage. Two actors carry the cage through the city’s piazzas where, to the accompaniment of an accordion, they recount the ancient and fascinating legend of the Pied Piper of Hamelin.
More than a fable, The Pied Piper of Hamelin is an interplay of rhyme, music, and theater that captures spectators’ imagination with a mixture of reality and fantasy, just the way that storytellers once did in all of Europe’s piazzas.
This magical and enjoyable offering inspires children to reflect upon the importance of honesty in a country’s leaders.
Accompanied by live music, the actors bring the story’s many characters to life in a tableau that opens like a magic box to reveal spellbinding interiors and never-ending surprises.
