| Organized by Flaminio Gualdoni The title of the video has a double meaning, on the one hand evoking “crucifixion” and on the other a fiction, an unknown or indeterminate (X) fiction. This doubling in its turn suggests the intrinsic indeterminacy of art, of poetry, which require a personal engagement to produce a reading that is equally personal. Xfiction springs from a different way of thinking about video, stripping it of everything that can turn it in a referential object. Narrative, colours, editing, speed, coup-de-theâtre and high definition represent the fashion in video today, and it is these precisely that have been systematically eliminated from Xfiction. Video art differs from cinema as poetry differs from the from the novel, or even as art from design, differing in aim and register, seeking to tune in to a different “frequency,” purer in being free of reference or utility Xfiction has its origin in 30 seconds of “nucleus” filming, a simple scene with a simple gesture and simple, common, sounds. The apocalyptic rumble in the background of the video derives from the “genetic modification” of these sounds and comments from casual audience, purified, like the images themselves, through a slow, years long process. Extracting vision from everyday reality, looking for the chance encounter with otherness, for prophecy amid the rubbish of the metropolitan Babylon. But differing from other similar works in its strict rejection of reference to everyday life, so refining the image to produce a primordial archetype – essential, palaeo-expressive, iconic in its exactitude yet historically unsituated. A direct message, without mediation, without indulgence, a formal hybrid that does not reject technology but tries rather to go beyond its tyranny, a tyranny too much and too often flattered by contemporary artists and critics.
