An artistic project by two young French architects from Nancy, which meets the search started by Sol LeWitt, the famous conceptual artist, who lived in Spoleto for over 30 years.

Such a tribute follows as an artistic continuum the exhibition ARTIST’S BOOKS by SOL LEWITT, held in Spoleto, at the Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna, from 7th April to 13th May 2009, on occasion of the second anniversary of LeWitt’s death, and which will be presented again next September in Bologna, Museo Internazionale della Musica, during ArteLibro Festival, and afterwards in Paris, New York and Istanbul.
4096 is displayed in a first-ever preview in Spoleto, Chiesa di San Carlo, as a collateral event of the Festival dei Due Mondi (26th June – 12th July 2009).

The project by VIAINDUSTRIAE and STUDIO A’87, curated by Giorgio Maffei, Emanuele De Donno and Franco Troiani, focuses on the power of the “open” work by Sol LeWitt and his conceptual legacy, which has been inherited and renewed by many contemporary artists.

 

Maël Veisse and Sébastien Renauld (F) explore shape systems, opening up their possibilities, which are infinite inscriptions in the heart of finished devices. The combination reveals itself through installations or dwellings. In this case it spills over the space marked by the step and the network of cube shapes.
The two artists/architects investigate systematically all the additional possibilities, which the American master left aside in his Open Cubes. They have found 4096 of them, determined by 217 matrices. The entire study is condensed in 13 artist’s books, each in a single copy, which quote in a mathematical way the artist’s book of 1974 by Sol LeWitt, Incomplete open cubes. This mighty work, halfway between analytical rigour and metaphysical rhythmic, gives life to the project of creating an installation/book/setting, which is catalogued in 13 volumes and broken out in 217 concrete shapes and 7 A0 panels displayed in Spoleto, Chiesa di San Carlo. The exhibition ‘dialogues’ with two ‘milestone’ artist’s books by Sol LeWitt, not as a sign of servile deference, but as a symptom of the genetic code of the work.
