Rufus Wainwright
Defined in a friendly way by Elton John as “the greatest songwriter in the world” and praised by the
New York Times for his “original genuineness”, Rufus Wainwright is known as one of the best songwriters of his generation. Son of the folk singers Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle,
and Martha Wainwright’s brother, Rufus has been able to find his own distinctive sound which has determined his success in the world of rock, opera, theater, dance and film. In 2009 he composes
his first opera Prima Donna, which makes a successful debut at the Manchester International Festival. That same year he collaborates with the director Robert Wilson for Shakespeare Sonette at the  Berliner Ensemble in Berlin for which he wrote the original music. Wainwright has produced 6 albums and 2 DVDs. He has also participated in many compilations and soundtracks, and collaborated with artists such as Elton John, David Byrne, Rosanne Cash and Keane. He has just released his latest album All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu. His previous album titled Milwaukee At Last!!! is a live recording of his tour Release the Stars. In 2007 the live concert recorded at Carnegie Hall, Rufus Does Judy At Carnegie Hall, he received a Grammy nomination. Among the awards received  there is  a Juno Award for Best Alternative Album in 1999 and 2001, respectively, Rufus Wainwright and Poses. He was nominated as Songwriter of the Year in 2008 for the album Release the Stars. His musical career is  alongside Rufus Wainwright as actor.  He took part in the film by Oscar-winning Deny Arcand´s L´Âge des Ténèbres (2007), the film Heights (2005) by Merchant Ivory, and the blockbuster The Aviator (2004), directed by Martin Scorsese. At the age of 14, he composed and performed a song for the film, Tommy Tricker And The Stamp Traveller, when he was nominated for the 1989 Genie Award (Canada) for  Best Original Song and in 1990 for the Juno Award for the  most promising male vocalist.
