Crusades is a theatrical performance that offers several reasons to reflect on the necessity of elaborating courses of peace and reciprocal tolerance, as yesterday as today, to overcome the differences in favour of a real integration of peoples. Nathan the Wise is a poem written in the Age of Enlightenment by G. E. Lessing, and tells the story of Nathan the Hebrew, who after losing wife and sons in an anti-Semitic pogrom, adopts a Christian orphan called Recha. The plot unfolds in Jerusalem, crossroad of the three monotheistic religions – Christianity, Hebraism, Islamism – during the third crusade.

There are historical moments in which some conflicts that seemed forgotten, return. Modernity had deceived us that differences among faiths were ancient stuff. But sometimes antique and modern mix themselves without any logic. Theatre is ancient. It is the place of civil meditation and it may help to comprehend. “Crusades” makes voices meet together, even far from one another: voices of men that during the time have found the words to make questions to God and then look for His answers in the events.
